Fishpond Stories Presents... Talk like a Pirate Day! / Live Entertainment, Story Telling

Wed 19Sep
7:30 PM

Note: This event has finished

Tales of piratical high jinks laced with lost legends of the high seas, and spiced with a scattering of sea shanties.  Add a delicately gruesome tale of fog-bound apparitions and mischief afoot amongst the well-heeled dandies of old Jamaica and what you have is a very special event at the Fishpond, in honour of “International Talk Like a Pirate Day!”.

Join performance storyteller Sophie Snell and her partners in piratical crime, Tom Philips and Mel Blount for a rollicking evening of old fashioned storytelling for adults, in the candlelit glamour of the Fishpond’s newly renovated Ballroom.

Special concessions for suitably dressed buccaneers, wild wenches and sea-faring brigands…  Ooh aaaarggGH!

Sophie is a performance storyteller based in Derbyshire, known for her warm, engaging and animated style of storytelling and a deliciously wicked sense of humour.  She has a wide repertoire of tales from around the globe, but a particular interest in the lesser known folk tales of the British Isles – quirky, fun, fantastical, tales that twist and turn and quickly hook and hold the audience – whether adult or children.  Sophie performs at festivals, storytelling clubs, community and arts venues across the country.  She currently runs Flying Donkeys, Derby’s very own storytelling club and is also author of “The Pirate’s Sister”, a collection of “grown-up” pirate stories.  For more information see www.sophiesnell.co.uk.

“Those gifted with storytelling weave an invisible web that draws the listener into the tale without you realising what’s happening.  Sophie Snell is one of those storytellers whose voice mesmerizes you while images form in your mind as the tale unfolds.”  Cindy Vallar, reviewer, “Pirates & Privateers”.

“Very expressive… Viscerally thrilling… intellectually satisfying… Recommended.”  Stephanie Billan, Chairman, Buxton Festival Fringe, 2010.

“To possess that charisma, that energy, that memory!  Spellbinding… a beautiful piece… Fantastic evening – wonderful!”  Amanda Bowman,BBC RadioNottingham.

A storyteller from Leicestershire, Tom cuts quite a dash in pirate circles.  Known for his energetic, comedic style, he loves a local ghostly tale or two.  By day a teacher, he has been known to masquerade as Robin Hood, but in the underworld that is storytelling, he has darker tales to share…

Tom also plays guitar and banjo, and runs Good Impressions, a storytelling club in Hinckley.  See www.tomthetaleteller.webs.com.

One of the other “flying donkeys” resident performers, Mel is a storyteller of great charm and delicacy.  Which can be rather disconcerting when telling a tale of the fleshpots of theWest Indies!  But don’t be deceived… incisive image-laden wit lies behind those well-turned flourishes of phrase.

She is a talented horsewoman too – just the thing for swashbuckling stories from the 18th century!
