Ben Ottewell / Blues, Live Music

Thu 3Apr
8:00 PM

Note: This event has finished

One of three singers in Gomez, Ben Ottewell has always attracted attention for his trademark bluesy voice, which has been compared to everyone from Tom Waits to Yoda. “Ottewell’s voice is not of this world,” it was once written in GQ. “It is a deep, reverent baritone, the kind of voice that shakes windows.” Ottewell is the lead vocalist on many of Gomez’s best-known hits and fan favorites, including “How We Operate,” “See The World,” “Get Miles” and “We Haven’t Turned Around.”

Ottewell was raised in the Northern English county of Derbyshire, the son of a psychology professor and a nursery school teacher. His teenage idolization of Eddie Vedder was tempered by a taste for more offbeat singers
like Beck and Nick Drake.                                At Hallam University in nearby Sheffield — or rather, in a bar adjacent — Ottewell met his future Gomez bandmate Ian Ball, and from the moment he began to sang during the inebriated jam session that followed, he was officially recruited.

More than a decade hence, Ottewell’s gruff/tender pipes are among the most recognizable in music, and his deft slide guitar playing graces much of Gomez’s repertoire. He’s married, the proud father of young twins, and is now branching out into solo touring during down periods in the Gomez odyssey. Expect to hear Gomez songs old and new — some so new, no one even knows them as Gomez songs just yet — as well as assorted covers by the likes of Neil Young, Nick Drake, and Jackson Browne.
